Career & College Readiness

First-year students at Foxcroft Academy are primarily guided through adapting to the changes from middle school to high school. With assistance from School Counselors, our advisors assist the 9th grade students with identifying the appropriate courses to achieve their post-secondary goals.

Meetings & Milestones:  On  Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the year, students meet with their advisors to discuss course course planning, and post-secondary goals

Required Courses: First year students at FA are required to take a one-semester course, Intro to Jobs for Maine Graduates, which introduces them to the decisions they will be making as they progress through high school. This course includes researching careers that match their interests, the paths to those careers, and personal finance.

International Baccalaureate Program:  For students interested in the IB program, there is a seminar they can take to learn more about it.

Testing: First-year students  take the PSAT to become familiar with the testing process.

As first-year students transition into 10th grade, advisory meetings and counselor assistance focus on the students’ aptitudes, interests, and post-secondary objectives. This is when students begin to focus on their transcripts and what they need. With input from counselors and teacher recommendations, advisors assist 10th graders in choosing courses to ensure they meet graduation requirements and are aligned with their post-secondary goals. 

Meetings & Milestones: In the spring, sophomores meet with their counselor to start discussing their post-secondary plans.

International Baccalaureate Program: Students with a continued desire to enter the IB program in grade 11 take an additional seminar.

Testing:  Second-year students at Foxcroft Academy also take the PSAT, as a way to increase familiarity with the test.

The 11th grade is critical in the progression from high school to post-secondary success.  With input from counselors and teacher recommendations, advisors assist 11th graders in choosing courses to ensure that they meet graduation requirements while aligning with their post-secondary goals. 

Meetings & Milestones: Year three is when students have their Junior Conference with their counselors and are encouraged to form a list of potential schools that align with their goals.

Testing: Juniors retake the PSAT in the fall, which places students in the running for merit related scholarships, and the scores are sent to post-secondary institutions. They have the opportunity to take an after school SAT Prep Course with FA faculty. The SAT is offered once in school, at no cost to the students, in the spring.
