General Guidelines:
- Reading reports will be done via face-to-face, informal conversations.
- Students must choose material appropriate for their academic level. (Check with Ms. Young or Ms. Hardy first to be sure.)
- IEPs can be taken into consideration.
- Poetry books can be one book out of the four. If you choose a poetry book, you will need to memorize one of the poems in the book (minimum of five lines). You will need to explain the poem you memorized and what it means to you. You will also need to explain the theme of the poetry book and why you chose it.
- Students are required to meet with Ms. Hardy or Ms. Young for one book per year.
- Students are required to bring a hard copy of their book with them to the meeting, even if they listened to an audiobook version.
Standards for Meeting Requirements:
- The student clearly describes in detail the plot, characters, and theme of the book.
- The student can answer questions about certain passages of the book chosen at random.
- The student can discuss their expectations for the book at the time they selected it and to what degree their reading of the book aligned with those expectations.
- The student can make personal connections between their own life and the book, giving personal reflections such as what disturbed, interested, confused, or enlightened them while reading.
This Requirement Will Be Deemed Unmet If:
- The student was unable to discuss more than one of the above bullet points.
- The student did not attempt the project or meet the deadline.
- The student chose a book that does not meet their academic level.
- The student failed to convince the teacher interviewer that they read the book.
Email Ms. Hardy or Ms. Young to set up an appointment. Give at least 24-hour notice. Ms. Hardy is available in the library during school hours, and Ms. Young is available before and after school.
